Police Department Information

The City of Lambertville Police Department works to protect public safety and believes in proactive outreach to ensure constructive relations with the community. The Department performs its duties consistent with modern, community policing practices, routinely soliciting citizen input in addressing crime and quality-of-life issues and always striving to identify and solve problems by maintaining open lines of communication. Toward that end, all patrol officers now wear body cameras, which serve to enhance transparency and accountability.

Operational around-the-clock, seven days a week, the Department is primarily a uniformed patrol based operation. It does, however, provide a criminal investigative function through the assignment of a detective as well as conduct specialized patrols.

Our police officers and civilian staff are dedicated. Not only do our officers receive ongoing training in procedures, firearms and other essential areas of law enforcement, they also receive advanced training on topics, such as traffic accidents, criminal investigations, terrorism, internal affairs, narcotics.

To ensure that Lambertville is a safe place to walk, bike and drive, the police department vigilantly enforces the state’s driving laws and provides constant public education on safe driving habits, participating in a number of grant-funded programs safety programs. Click it or Ticket
Studies show that seat belts save lives, yet too many people still don’t buckle up. More than 1,600 unbuckled motor vehicle occupants died on New Jersey’s roadways in the past 10 years.

We enforce the seat belt laws with zero tolerance in Lambertville and provide ongoing education about the importance of wearing a seat belt whether you are the driver or a passenger. For more information on this initiative, visit Click it or Ticket.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
The City Police Department vigilantly enforces the drunk driving laws.  Driving under the influence remains the number one cause of traffic fatalities and there is no tolerance of it in Lambertville. People who drive drunk or under the influence of a recreational drug within the City limits will be pulled over and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. For more information, visit Drive Sober.

Internal Affairs Complaint Forms
In New Jersey, every state, county, and local law enforcement agency is required to establish a process for disciplining officers who commit misconduct or otherwise violate the agency’s rules. Generally speaking, this disciplinary process is handled by the agency’s “internal affairs” (IA) unit, which operates outside the normal chain of command and is responsible for investigating misconduct and recommending discipline to the agency’s leaders.

Public approval plays a crucial role in determining a law enforcement agency’s effectiveness. Law enforcement agencies must therefore provide formal procedures for the investigation of complaints as well as the administration of corrective options, such as discipline. 

The establishment of such procedures instills confidence in the agency’s integrity which, in-turn, engenders community support. Prevention is the primary means of reducing and controlling employee misconduct. To that end, it is the policy of the Lambertville City Police Department to discover and correct organizational conditions which permit misconduct to occur by accepting and investigating all complaints of alleged agency or employee misconduct from any source, even an anonymous one.

The Lambertville City Police Department accepts anonymous complaints, third-party complaints, and complaints from unaccompanied juveniles. Immigrants who seek to file complaints will NOT be asked about their immigration status.

A complaint should be filed when you witness or experience a personal encounter with any law enforcement personnel that involves criminal conduct, misconduct, abusive or discriminatory behavior, neglect of duty, corrupt activity, inappropriate conduct, or a violation of rules and regulations.

Both of these documents have been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Haitian, Hindi, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. Complete the Citizen Complaint form. Once the form is complete, you may mail, drop off the form to the PD (349 North Main Street, Lambertville NJ 08530) or email the complaint form to [email protected]. You may also telephone the department with an anonymous complaint. Once the department receives your complaint, an Internal Affairs Officer will contact you.
